All current issues of Seeds of Spring will be on sale this Saturday at @constellation I am really exited to finally be at this bookfair. Come by to chat if you are in Montreal this weekend.
Seeds of SPring is a serial YA comic, written by Chris Coquard, that I have been illustrating for a few years now. It's an adaptation of Peter Kropotkin's autobiography, the famous russian prince who rejected his noble titles to become a respected scientist, and humanitarian, who charted part of Siberia, escaped Russia's most feared prison, and is remembered as one the worlds most notable anarchist thinkers. The story is told from the perspective of a current day teenager named Naguset who learns to reconnect with her Mi'kmaq culture with the help of her grandparents. Both stories parallell each other in themes and juxtaposes current day issues with historical drama. (I also have PDF versions on my Ko-Fi)

A hand holding 6 comic books that read "Seeds of Spring" volumes 1 to 6. Books 1 and 2 are of a different format than the other 4. Book 6 is on the front of all the others and show a group of explorers in siberia.

He who attempts to control another is a governor, an aggressor, an invader; and the nature of such invasion is not changed, whether it is made by one man upon another man, after the manner of the ordinary criminal, or by one man upon all other men, after the manner of an absolute monarch, or by all other men upon one man, after the manner of a modern democracy.

I shouldn’t keep sharing my Seeds of Spring stuff before I finish the book. But I am especially proud of how this panel is coming along. I am trying really hard to make my backgrounds look more organic and I think I really nailed the overcrowded office.

An unfinished comic panel showing two 19th century university students in an over cluttered office. On the left, a young man with short hair and a beard is holding a stack of book and asking: “Where should I put these? Do you even know where everything goes?” The second character is another young man with round spectacles and a full beard, moustache and whiskers. He is sitting at his desk and answers: “Oh yes. I have everything quite well organized, actually.”

Here is the finished version of the previously posted page from the upcoming Seeds of Spring 7.

A black and white comic page. We see a 26 year old Peter Kropotkin looking frustrated at a school desk at university. He then walks through a crowd and is greeted by his brother, Alexander who quips about all the papers he is holding. They then discuss the fact that their father doesn’t speak to them anymore for having quit the military.

Starting back on Seeds of Spring 7 after a slight hiatus. This one will feature Kropotkin in University after leaving the military. Here is a WIP of the page I am working on.

As I get into editing and as I am preparing to draw the cover for book 6, here are some early concept sketches that I did back in 2019 to develop the visual style of the series. I still like them today. (Seeds of Spring books 1 to 5 are currently available from Microcosm Publishing microcosmpublishing.com/catalo )

A black and white ink drawing of a bearded old man sitting at a writing desk.

A black and white drawing of a young bearded soldier on a horse. He is crossing a river. We see the scene from behind the character, but he is turning his head to face the viewer.
